Popeye the Sailor copyright expires in EU

December 31, 2008

(ChattahBox) — The copyright expires on Popeye the Sailor Man on January 1, 2009 and falls into the public domain in Britain under an EU law that restricts the rights of authors to 70 years after their death. Elzie Segar, the Illinois artist who created Popeye, his love interest Olive Oyl and nemesis Bluto, died in 1938. Segar’s premature death, aged 43, means that Popeye is an early test case for cartoon characters.  Popeye is one of the first of the famous 20th-century cartoon characters to fall out of copyright. Betty Boop and ultimately Mickey Mouse will follow. Read more

Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter set to cash in on baby photos

December 31, 2008

(ChattahBox) — Can you believe this? Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter Bristol Palin who gave birth over the weekend, is reportedly going to sell her baby photos to the highest bidder. According to an MSNBC source, bidding for the baby photos of Levi and Bristol’s son Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston started at $100,000.

People Magazine, who got the exclusive (perhaps no coincidence) on the birth announcement, and In Touch magazine were the only serious bidders. The bidding apparently started well before the baby was born, but once Levi’s mom was arrested — well, then you had a story,” says one editor.

Sherry L. Johnston sent text messages to two police informants discussing drug transactions before her arrest on felony drug charges involving the drug OxyContin. The 42-year-old Johnston was arrested last week after state troopers served a search warrant at her Wasilla home. She is out on bail.

In the end it’s believed that People Magazine paid out $300,000 for the exclusive rights to the photos. Previouly when vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin was on the cover of People, Us Weekly, and OK! on the same week, it was only People that saw a bump in sales. Apparently if you start with a ’surprise’ vice-presidential candidate, throw in an unexpected teenage pregnancy, mix with some ‘legal problems’ for the teenage baby daddies mother and you have the formula to cash in on baby pictures? Sounds more like the ‘perfect formula’ for the Jerry Springer show to me!
