Action Comics #1 - First Superman comic goes on auction

(ChattahBox) — And now for some important news. The ultimate comic book goes up for sale today. An “unrestored” (photo left) copy of Action Comics #1 (1938), the first appearance of Superman (and Lois Lane too), is expected to sell for $400,000 or more at auction today. I once owned Action Comic #17, so I am totally into it (don’t judge), but I won’t be bidding because I am poor. Comic Connect is hosting the auction on behalf of an unnamed seller. Only about 100 copies of Action Comics No. 1 are known to exist, and they seldom come up for sale. Read more

1.5 million year footprints show human ancestor with modern stride

(ChattahBox) — 1.5 million year footprints like those found in wet sand, were discoverd in northern Kenya and most likely were left by a human ancestor called Homo erectus, scientists said on Thursday in the journal Science. The species Homo erectus had a smaller brain than modern people but had generally similar body proportions to Homo sapiens. Read more

Citi Group and U.S. Government close to stock deal

Citigroup(ChattahBox) — Citigroup Inc and the Obama administration are close or about to annouce an agreement in which the government will substantially raise its investment in the bank, in return for concessions, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

Under a deal expected to be announced today (Friday), the Treasury Department would conditionally agree to convert some of its current holdings of preferred Citigroup shares into common stock, at an unknown price speculated at as much as $5 a share. Read more

Rocky Mountain News publishes final edition Today (Friday)

(ChattahBox) — Goodbye to another media outlet, the victim of a terrible economy. The Rocky Mountain News publishes its last paper today (02-27-09), after publisher E.W. Scripps Co. failed to find a buyer.

Rich Boehne, chief executive officer of Rocky-owner Scripps, broke the news to the staff yesterday, ending nearly three months of speculation over the paper’s future.

Scripps began seeking offers for the 150-year-old Denver daily in December after declining advertising sales made the publication its only unprofitable newspaper. Shutting down the Rocky, which lost $16 million last year, leaves the Denver Post as the city’s only major newspaper.

Employees will remain on the payroll until April 28, Scripps said.

Medical marijuana bill heading to the House after clearing Senate

(ChattahBox) — Senate Bill 326, sponsored by Sen. Ron Erickson, D-Missoula, giving medical-marijuana patients better access to the drug won final approval from the state Senate Tuesday, sending it on to the House for consideration.

The Senate passed the bill on a 28-22 vote, picking up some additional support since the measure won preliminary endorsement Saturday by a 25-24 margin. Read more
