Southwest Joins Bidding for Bankrupt Frontier Airlines

(ChattahBox) — Southwest Airlines is reportedly preparing a bid to acquire bankrupt Frontier Airlines thwarting a rival bid, both carriers said on Thursday.

The nonbinding proposal worth a minimum of $113.6 million, from Southwest exceeds a current bid for Frontier by Republic Airways Holdings, which is in the midst of a buying spree in the industry.

Denver-based Frontier filed for bankruptcy protection in April 2008, after Southwest moved into the Colorado market.

Government ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Program Too Successful - Going Broke

(ChattahBox) — The new much-heralded government incentive program ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program was supposed to last until the end of October—but on Thursday, less than one week after its launch, the program may be halted.  Apparently it burned through the $1 billion allocated for it in six short days. Transportation Department officials called lawmakers earlier Thursday to alert them of plans to suspend the program as early as Friday. But a White House official said later the program had not been suspended and they were reviewing their options to keep the program funded, according to the AP. The program officially dubbed the ‘Car Allowance Rebate System‘ was signed into law in June, and started July 25th and was supposed to run until Nov. 1 or until the $1 billion was burned up.

Boxer Arturo Gatti death now called suicide and wife released

(ChattahBox) — The death of Canadian boxer Arturo Gatti, 37, in Brazil earlier this month which was first believed to be a murder has been now ruled a probable suicide.  Gatti, a former world boxing champion, was found dead July 11 in an apartment he was renting with his family in the seaside resort of Porto de Galinhas near the northern Brazilian city of Recife.
