Report: GM Preparing to Drop Pontiac Brand Monday

April 25, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The days of the the Pontiac Tempest LeMans GTO have long past and General Motors is preparing to announce Monday, that the Pontiac car brand, once marketed as GM’s “Excitement division,” will be killed off.

The Detroit News reported Saturday that GM has already notified Pontiac dealers that the 83-year-old brand will be discontinued as part of the government-supervised restructuring plan. The struggling former auto giant will also close plants, cut jobs and negotiate with bondholders to cut $28 billion in debt, the News said.

Despite being the third-best selling brand behind Chevrolet and GMC, Pontiac’ fate has been on the fence since it was not named as one of GM’s four “core brands:” Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. However it was also not named to be killed or sold off, as were Saturn, Saab and Hummer. Plans were to maintain Pontiac as a niche brand with one or two models into the future as had been previously announced by company officials.

Pontiac, was originally founded in 1909 as the Oakland Car Co. in Pontiac, Mich., and is credited by many for launching the muscle-car era in the U.S. when it introduced the GTO in 1964. The brand’s identification with power and performance is a liability for GM as it is being forced to make a lot of hard decisions to restructure itself. The automaker has until May 31 to demonstrate to the White House that it has a viable comeback plan that will justify further tax-payer loans. Most Pontiac showrooms have already been combined with Buick and GMC, but there are about 40 stand-alone dealerships.

It’s about time. With fewer divisions GM can’t go back to “badge engineering” (i.e. Saturn Sky=Pontiac Solstice) and instead focus on creating a distinctive, concentrated lineup.

That is b and s; Pontiac sells almost twice the cars as Buick, and Pontiac gets the plank? Buick is a useless luxury brand in GM; GM has Cadillac why do you need 2 luxury brands and have fewer sales then if you dropped Buick and kept Pontiac!

I will say right now; i will never buy any other GM car besides a Pontiac so for future reference GM you wont be getting my money anymore!

I have family who retired from gm. I am completely for dropping Pontiac. Every single Pontiac car has a partner car except the vibe. Chevy, Saturn, and Cadillac are all making huge strides to the future while pontiac is still trying to love off of the gto, that they cut. Every brand appeals to some market group. Pontiac is covered by Chevys so I don’t see any point. I have been saying Pontiac is dead for years!
