Steve Jobs had liver transplant during medical leave according to report

June 20, 2009

(ChattahBox) — When Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs took a medical leave five-month ago related to his health, it was speculated it might be to remove the remains of his pancreas, related to the rare type of pancreatic cancer he had battled in 2004.  Jobs at the time though said he had been diagnosed with a hormone imbalance that caused him to lose weight. As it turns out according to The Wall Street Journal Jobs, 53, had a liver transplant two months ago in Tennessee, but is still expected to return to work by the end of the month.

Jobs co-founded Apple in 1976. He left in 1985, before returning in 1997 and becoming full-time chief executive in 2000, where he is credited in having a crucial role in Apple’s growth. He may return to work part-time at first, WSJ said, quoting an unnamed source. The source said Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook may continue to manage daily operations of the company when Jobs first returns.

On a side note Jobs getting an out of state liver transplant highlights the potential inequities in waiting for an organ donor. Last year, 1,481 people died awaiting a liver donor.  It is unclear why Jobs had the transplant in Tennessee for certain, but for many with means, seeking out a hospital out of state where the waiting times are typically shorter is allowed in our medical system. Those who travel out of state must be evaluated at the new hospital, but there are no restrictions to being on the wait list at more than one transplant center.
