France Labour Minister Looks Into Wave of Suicides In France Telecom

September 12, 2009

France (ChattahBox) – An investigation is set to begin to look into the recent high number of suicides of staff within the company France Telecom.

Labour Minister Xavier Darcos is scheduled to meet with the head of the company to discuss the deaths of 23 employees in the nine months, and the attempted suicide of another who stabbed himself in the stomach during a business meeting.

Accusations have been circulated about an alleged ‘hard managing style’ that some worry has been putting too high an amount of stress on staff.

There is also some talk about the privatization of the company being to blame, as 40,000 jobs have been axed, and many employees have been forced into new positions, or to work in different conditions.

Unions talks have officially began after the last suicide a week ago, when a 32-year-old woman left from her office building.

New counselors have been added to the staff pending investigation.
