Is T-Mobile Eyeing Takeover Bid of Sprint?

September 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)— There has been increasing speculation in recent days that Sprint Nextel may be targeted soon by T-Mobile in another takeover bid to join the two telecommunication giants.

Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse refused to comment on Thursday on the rumors of an impending merger.

The UK Sunday Telegram reported that Deutsche Telekom, owner of T-Mobile UK and T-Mobile US, plans to make a bid on Sprint in the next few weeks in an attempt to turn around the struggling T-Mobile business.

T-Mobile UK entered into a joint venture with France Telecom’s Orange last week. And now Deutsche Telekom is turning its attention to T-Mobile US. The struggling T-Mobile US entity is fast losing its customer base to rivals AT&T and Vodafone/Verizon Wireless, as well as smaller operators.

However, Sprint’s CEO, Hesse acknowledged a merger may be difficult. A merger between Deutsche Telekom/T-Mobile and Sprint could run afoul of tougher U.S. antitrust laws under the Obama administration.
