Obama to Announce Stimulus Funding for High-Speed Trains

January 27, 2010

(ChattahBox)— The day after his State of the Union Address, President Obama plans to announce a series of federal stimulus grants to fund the development of high-speed rail systems across targeted areas of the nation. Obama will release about $8 billion in stimulus funds and present the new transportation systems as job creation projects.

President Obama and Vice President Jose Biden are scheduled to appear at a town hall meeting in Tampa, Fla. on Thursday to announce the creation of 13 new major high-speed rail corridors. The State of Florida has proposed a high-speed rail line connecting Orlando and Tampa, which is likely to receive federal funding. California is also in the mix with a plan to develop a high-speed train between Sacramento and San Diego.

A White House official says that the rail projects are expected to create or save tens of thousands of jobs in the construction of the high-speed trains in areas, such as track-laying, manufacturing, planning and engineering.
