A Look at Google’s New Nexus One Handset

January 5, 2010

(ChattahBox) – Google unveiled the Nexus One on Tuesday at an invitation-only event at its California headquarters, marking the online search giant’s first leap into the smartphone market. The phone already available are sold only through a Web store operated by Google, and cost $180 with a contract with T-Mobile or $530 unlocked (the phone works with “nearly all” GSM SIM cards, according to Google), leaving the phone open to other carriers.  T-Mobile is the initial service provider, but Verizon in the United States and Vodafone in Europe will be coming on board later, and more operators are expected.  The new handset reflects Google’s effort to expand advertising sales on mobile devices, a market that may reach $2 billion to $3 billion in the U.S. by 2013,  according to Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.

Beck Spreads Dubious Rumor to Claim: Obama Uses ‘Chicago Thuggery’ ‘That Borders on Treason’

December 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)— Glenn Beck, the fearmongering Fox News host, has finally gone too far. Earlier in the year he accused President Obama of being a racist with a deep seated hatred of white people. On Wednesday, Beck went off the rails and he accused President Obama of treason. The conspiracy-theorist-in-chief devoted his Fox News program to peddling a dubious right-wing rumor that the Obama administration threatened Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) with the closure of Nebraska’s Offutt Air Force Base, to obtain his vote on health care reform. The highly dubious and poorly sourced rumor started on right-wing blogs and was repeated by Weekly Standard columnist Michael Goldfarb. Both Sen. Nelson and the White House House have categorically denied the false rumor, but that hasn’t stopped Glenn Beck from presenting it as fact and to use it to accuse the President of the United States of treason. EPA never implemented the Clean Water Act and Now Blames States

September 16, 2009

Opinion/Editorial by guest writer: Peter Maier, PhD, PE

(ChattahBox) — When Congress passed the Clean Water Act in 1972, with its goal to eliminate
all water pollution by 1985 and as interim goal ’swimmable and fishable’
waters by 1983, Congress specifically demanded a “technology-based”
implementation program, whereby all national permits would require “best
available treatment technology”.  A water-quality based program (treatment
based on water quality of receiving waters) would be too easy to manipulate by
local politicians and basically defeat the purpose (setting national treatment
standards) of the Act. Read more

THOSE SIX COMFORTING WORDS – A Tribute to the Rhinovirus

September 1, 2009

Written and illustrated by Alisa Singer(ChattahBox) — Facemasks, pandemic, vaccines, anti-bacterial hand sanitizers … it wasn’t always like this. As the country braces for the arrival of another fall flu season, and the unwelcome possibility of confronting an evolved and more virulent version of swine flu, I am called back to a kinder gentler time, and a kinder gentler virus – one that kept us company for many a cold winter day and that, like the polar bear and the other 12,258 endangered species, is now being threatened with extinction. It appears that researchers have hunted down and decoded the genomes for the 99 strains of the rhinovirus (DBA “the common cold”) and have developed a catalog of its vulnerabilities. “We are now quite certain that we see the Achilles’ heel, and that a very effective treatment for the common cold is at hand,” said Stephen B. Liggett, co-author of research published earlier this year in Science magazine and reported in The New York Times.
