Teenager Commits Suicide in front of Live Web Community

November 22, 2008

Miami (CHattahBox) – In one of the most shocking incidences, a teenager committed suicide in front of live web cam as some computer users egged on him. Some of the online web users tried to talk him out of it but the college student, Abraham Biggs, took a drug overdose and committed a suicide.

According to Biggs’ family, the 19-years old, suffered from bipolar disorder or manic depression. He committed a suicide in his father’s home and lay dead on the bed on Wednesday afternoon. The camera was still running 12 hours after Biggs announced his intentions online around 3 am. It remains unclear how many people watched the events unfold live on the webcam.

While Biggs declared his intentions online to commit a suicide on a website meant for body builders. Some of the users did not take him seriously as they alleged that he had made similar threats earlier as well. However, as his intentions slowly became clear to some of the users, they tried to talk him out of it. A few of them contacted the website to notify the police. The camera was still running when the police arrived and people saw the policemen enter the room. Biggs lay dead on his father’s bed with his face turned away from the camera.

Biggs family was infuriated over the whole incidence as they alleged that neither the viewers nor the Website that hosted the video tried to stop him. The website got hits and viewers and nothing happened for hours, said Biggs’ sister.

According to Wendy Crane, an investigator with the Broward County medical examiner’s office, Biggs took a dose big enough to kill him. Some onlookers said that he appeared to be breathing for sometime after he swallowed the pills. He went to sleep while some of the online users cracked jokes about him.

As police entered the room, the audience’s reaction was filled with Internet shorthand: “OMFG,” one wrote, meaning “Oh, my God.” Others, either not knowing what they were seeing, or not caring, wrote “lol,” which means “laughing out loud,” and “hahahah.”

Biggs is not the first case who has committed a suicide in front of the live webcam. Such a case is seen as an extreme case of young generation sharing intimate details about themselves.

I knew this would happen on BB.com one day. I left there many months ago after it became clear it was so poorly monitored. I was able to review the entire incident via cached pages.
The monitor, Roxie, made many dismissive comments before and after it was clear the teenager was dead
Another poster, an adult woman with a child, told the teen that he “hadnt taken enough” to kill himself while she watched him die. This same poster, Staberella, aspires to become a member of the FDNY. God help us.

Parents blame others. Typical. Probably points to underlying cause.
