Message in a Bottle Surfaced after 39 Years

December 3, 2008

North Carolina (ChattahBox) — A message in a bottle tossed off in New Jersey in 1969 was found in North Carolina, 39 years later. The bottle was tossed off into the ocean off Barnegat Bay with a message sealed in aSchaefer Beer Bottle about 400 miles away from where it was found.

Mark Ciarmello and his 3-year-old daughter, residents of the Downingtown, Pa. found the bottle along a beach in Corolla, N.C., in October. It read: “If found notify the North Haledon Fire Co. 2.” Mark called North Haledon and emailed the pictures of the bottle to the firefighters.

Firefighters at North Haledon are not sure who tossed the bottle into the sea but suspect that someone might have thrown it into the water during their fishing trips that they used to take years ago.

I know who through the bottle in the water. It was my brother, deceased 12 years ago. The fire company identified it also. But the news did not report that. It would be nice to have the message/bottle as a keepsake from my only sibling.
