Man Has Hand Reattached After Shark Attack

February 24, 2009

Australia (ChattahBox) – A man who had his hand ripped off in a shark attack in Sydney has hadit reattached, in an incredible surgery taking advantage of the ancient method of using leeches in medicine.

Glen Orgias was the second victim within a two day period to suffer an attack from a Great White Shark in February, and doctors did not believe they would be able to save his hand. However, using leeches, they were able to increase blood flow, allowing the hand, which was hanging by only a few bits of skin, to stay alive.

While it isn’t completely clear if his hand will remain healthy and usable, the first step is an amazing one.

“I thought the hopes for the hand were close to zero, but I have hope in time that Glen will have a working hand,” Dr Kevin Ho told reporters.
“We’re far from out of the woods but I think for him to make it to this stage is a minor miracle and a reflection of how healthy and physically well he is.”
