Action Comics #1 – First Superman comic book sells for $317,200

March 15, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The ultimate comic book has been sold, an “unrestored” (photo left) copy of Action Comics #1 (1938), the first appearance of Superman (and Lois Lane too).  The DC comic book sold for $317,200 in an Internet auction hosted by ComicConnect.com, by John Dolmayan, drummer for the rock band System of a Down.

Even for that stunning amount some thought Action #1 might have fetched $400k in a better economy. The previous owner who obviously is living my dreams, had bought the Holy Grail of comic books, secondhand for 35 cents in the 1950s when he was 9 years old. Dolmayan, who is also a dealer of rare comic books, said he acquired the Superman comic on behalf of an undisclosed client. Only about 100 copies of Action Comics No. 1 are known to exist, and they seldom come up for sale.
