Worlds Deadliest Spider Visits Tulsa Whole Foods

March 20, 2009

Okla. (ChattahBox) -— A whole Food Store got an unexpected hitchhiker along with some imported produce.  KOTV-TV reports that a stock boy who was unpacking bananas from Honduras found a large spider Sunday but managed to catch it in a container.

The spider was turned over to University of Tulsa Animal Facilities director Terry Childs who identified it as a Brazilian Wandering Spider and said this type of spider is the deadliest in the world in that it kills more people then any other.

Childs said a bite from this aggressive and highly venomous spider found in tropical South and Central America will kill a person in about 25 minutes and while there is an antidote he doesn’t know of any in the Tulsa area.

It’s not uncommon for spiders and other insects to be found in imported produce, and a manager at Whole Foods says the store regularly checks its goods and that’s how the spider was found.
