Stolen plane leads bizarre chase from Ontario to Missouri

April 7, 2009

(ChattahBox) — A man stole a four-seat single-engine Cessna 172 Skyhawk from Confederation College Aviation Centre of Excellence at Thunder Bay International Airport at about 3 p.m. yesterday and took it on a dangerous ‘joy ride’ though no one of yet knows why he did it.

The Cessna was taken from the school in Ontario by a student pilot and flew over Lake Superior less than half an hour later, according to NORAD officials. F-16 fighter jets intercepted the pilot near Michigan’s upper peninsula border with Wisconsin at 4:43 p.m., and tracked the Cessna until its safe landing.

The pilot was flying erratically and refused to communicate with authorities through the entire flight. The F-16 fighters were on standby but not ordered to use lethal force to bring the plane down but the incident caused the Wisconsin Capitol in Madison to be evacuated as a precaution as the plane flew through that section of the state.

The pilot finally landed the plane under what appeared to be a bridge or culvert, apparently in an attempt to hide it in far southeastern Missouri, according to the FAA spokeswoman.

The FBI identified the pilot as Yavuz Berke, formerly known as Adam Dylan Leon, a 31-year-old naturalized Canadian citizen who was born in Turkey.

He was taken into custody at an Ellsinore grocery story after a brief manhunt, according to Missouri state police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Why did we let this guy keep flying? He should have been greased by air to air missiles. Now we just showed terrorists how meek and mild we are. We won’t even protect our own airspace from planes flown in from a foreign country. How sad. The land of the free and the home of the brave has been reduced to hand-wringing weenies! I really hate that.
