Twenty-Six Year Old “Baby” Found in India

April 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Indian Pediatricians are puzzled by 26-year old patient, Jerly Lyngdoh, who seems destined to remain forever in the tiny body of a “baby,” at 84cm tall, weighing just 22lbs, having a head circumference of a 9-12 month old, and the mental capacity of a baby aged between one and two-years old. Jerly is also unable to speak. His poor illiterate parents, toiling as farmers in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills, have quietly cared for their “infant” son for the past 26-years, without complaint.

Pediatrician Dr J. Ryndong, believes Jerly suffers from a rare condition, called pan-hypo pituitarism, which causes a complete malfunction of the pituitary gland, blocking secretion of growth hormones needed for normal development. The standard treatment is lifetime replacement hormone therapy, which eases the symptoms, but patients still suffer from abnormalities and health problems.

Standard medical treatments were not available to Jerly’s parents, until now. A charitable society recently took an interest in Jerly’s condition and put his mother, Merilda Lyngdoh in touch with doctors from Shillong Civil and Ganesh Das Hospitals. Little Jerly has been receiving various treatments, but so far remains a baby. Doctors say the only adult part of Jerly are his teeth.

Jerly’s mother said her family believed Jerly brought a curse upon the family and pressured her to dispose of her baby, but a mother’s love prevailed. When Jerly suffered from seizures at 4 months old, she brought Jerly to a village healer.

Dr Ryndong says digging too deep to discover the exact cause of Jerly’s ailment would be too costly for the Indian hospitals. He is publicizing Jerly’s case, with the hope specialists from around the globe could help crack the curious case of Jerly, the adult “baby.”
