Man Contemplating Bridge Jump Pushed By Passing Pedestrian

May 24, 2009

China (ChattahBox) – A man who had been thrown into debt after a failed business attempt was also thrown off of a bridge, where he had sat for hours contemplating suicide.

According to reports, Chen Fuchao had been standing on the edge of the bridge for nearly five hours, threatening to jump from his spot to his death below. Police and emergency teams were standing by, a large inflated cushion below, in hopes of talking him down before he took the leap.

But after waiting for hours to get through the traffic that had backed up on the bridge, Lai Jiansheng, a 66-year-old man, decided to end the struggle himself.

He broke through the police barrier, approached Fuchao, shook his hand, and pushed him off.

“I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish,” Lai told reporters before being hauled off by police.

“Their action violates a lot of public interest. They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities attention to their appeals.”

Fuchao survived, but has significant spinal injuries. Lai, who has been previously diagnosed with an unspecified mental illness, is in custody, though no official charges have yet been released.
