Bank of America Turns Armless Man Away, After Demanding a Thumbprint

September 3, 2009

(ChattahBox)— File this story under the heading, compassionless bureaucrats. A man born with no arms walked into a Florida Bank of America recently to cash a check from his wife, and because he had no thumbs to provide a thumbprint, the bank refused to cash the check.

Steve Valdez, 54-years-old, walked into a Tampa Bank of America branch seeking to cash a check made out to him from his wife, drawn on her Bank of America account. Because he didn’t have an account at the bank, he was asked to provide a thumbprint for identification. Valdez, wears prosthetic arms and is unable to offer a thumbprint.

When Valdez handed the check to the teller with his prosthetic arms he was treated with a complete lack of compassion, with the teller saying, “Obviously you aren’t going to be able to give us a thumbprint.”

Valdez offered two forms of ID and he still was refused. The bank manager was adamant that those were the rules and told Valdez to either come back to the bank with his wife, or open an account himself.

Valdez feeling defeated and humiliated, returned to work at the Hillsborough County Public Works Customer Satisfaction Center, and called his wife to tell her what had just occurred at her bank.

The bank has since apologized to Valdez. Nicole Nastacie Bank of America spokesperson says, the bank should have “offered alternative requirements if an individual is not able to give a thumbprint.”

Well, yes one would think so.

Well, they are a bank, after all. They aren’t in the business of giving money to just anyone who’s legally entitled to it. If they were to do that, why, bank presidents might someday get annual bonuses of less than a hundred million dollars, and we all know what a terrible tragedy that would be.

Yes, you Bank of America! Absolutely 110% PATHETIC!
The bank manager should be fired!!
I supposed the check was for a million bucks, right?
The whole purpose of the impersonal ‘thumbprint’ is to catch the suspect….
Gee, think you could find a guy with no arms in the line up?
Of course that is out of the hundreds of people with no arms in the area…
TAKE NOTE BOFA CUSTOMERS …YOUR FEES ARE AT WORK – Absolutely 110% PATHETIC! Can you say – “pull your money” – ” credit union”.

Bank of america does it again. I remember my wife convinced me of how great the photo on bank card ID was…. until B of A sent me my card with a picture of another person on my card. Plus it was a female! I feel really secure now. People are brainless… such a tragedy.
