Mass Wedding Leads To 40,000 Marriages In Unification Church

October 14, 2009

Global (ChattahBox) – A mass wedding, likely the last to be performed by the agining head of the Unification church, has been performed, with 40,000 arranged marriages and vow renewals.

The Unification church, run by Rev. Sun Myung Moon, has been a controversial movement for decades. Started in the 1950’s, Moon believes he is a modern Messiah, who was approached by a vision of Christ when he was 15, and told to continue his work.

He has conducted a great deal of mass marriage ceremonies as his church, which many believe is a cult, has gained prominence. This latest is the largest in more than a decade.

Most of those wed were first time couples who had only met that day. Others were married couples who were renewing their vows within the church.

Now that the ceremonies have been performed, with tens of thousands in Japan, the US, Latin America, Europe, and South Korea, the couples now have a 40 day waiting period before they join each other in a joined home.

They are meant to use the time to spiritually prepare for marriage, and will not see each other until that time is over.
