Though this story seems silly and most sensible people would have no issue with what this employee did, Walmart has been forced into this decision for many reasons. But mostly 1: If the emplyee got hurt, he would most likely sue Walmart with his lawyer saying that the employee’s managers told him to put himself in harm’s way and/or 2: The suspect sues Walmart because the employee used excessive force in apprehending him. I agree, this whole thing makes Walmart look silly. But they are in a no-win situation in every direction. You can thank frivolous lawsuits and silly lawmakers and judges for that.

It should be noted that the suspect was not *obviously* armed until *after* the chase took place.

Wal-Mart should fire the bureaucrat who fires a hero. If that really is the company position – “we fire heroic employees” – then it’s time to boycott Wal-Mart nationwide. Since damn near everything they sell is made in China, that would only help the American economy.

And if Wal-Mart decides to hire Rutner back to save face, he ought to get a raise AND a big bonus.
