Inmates In India Given Yoga To Reduce Sentences

January 20, 2010

India (ChattahBox) – In an interesting approach to rehabilitation, an Indian prison is now offering inmates reduced sentences for completing yoga courses.

The plan allows inmates the chance to finish 3 month courses in yoga. For each course completed their sentence is reduced by a full 36 days.

So far 400 inmates are taking the courses, and 68 have been set for earlier release.

“We are running yoga classes in many jails. The basic objective to practice yoga in jails is to help the inmates to master the art, bust the stress, anger management and to keep them fit,” Sanjay Mani, Inspector-General of Prisons in Madhya Pradesh, said.

“We offer remission of sentence to prisoners who admit themselves for educational courses and yoga will be covered in the remission.”
