Nine-Year-Old Boy Cleared Of ‘Bee Sting’ Charges
February 1, 2010
Indonesia (ChattahBox) – A nine-year-old boy who was facing three years in prison after placing a bee on the cheek of a classmate that led to her being stung has been released into his parent’s custody and cleared of all charges.
Judge Sutriadi Yahya, who handled the case, expressed anger that the case had gone all the way to the high courts.
“It could have been settled amicably by the school and the parents involved.”
But according to a local paper, it was the wish of the parents of the girl to “make an example” of the boy, who they say were one of many teasing their daughter at school.
It was for this reason that they went to the police and had the boy arrested after they learned of the bee sting.
In Indonesia children over the age of eight are tried as adults. It is a matter of debate over whether or not to raise that age to twelve.
There have been a number of angry complaints worldwide over this practice, as placing children in adult prisons is against UN policy, which Indonesia is signed to follow.
