Swiss Considering Giving Animals The Rights To Free Attorneys
March 6, 2010
Switzerland (ChattahBox) – A new referendum is up for vote after 140,000 people signed a petition that would require the Swiss government to provide free legal aid for the representation of abused animals.
After the petition for the law to be placed on the docket drew 140,000 signatures, it was put up for a coming vote.
The bill is being heavily supported by Antoine F. Goetschel, an attorney who is well known for representing animals after a case where he represented a dead fish against a fisherman who he claims took ten minutes to kill the creature.
The case caused some controversy, including accusations of wasting the court’s time and resources. Goetschel lost the case.
But this new bill might be the first real step towards enforcing the strict rules the country already has on animal rights, including a ban on keeping a goldfish in a tank that doesn’t contain other fish.
