91-Year-Old Widow Lives for More Than a Decade With Corpses
July 6, 2010
Pennsylvania (ChattahBox) – A 91-year-old widow may be facing criminal charges after it was found that she was hoarding the bodies of her late husband and twin sister, after exhuming the bodies from where she had buried them in the backyard.
It is an odd case.
Jean Stevens didn’t kill her husband; he dies of Parkinson’s disease in 1999. She didn’t kill her sister; she died of cancer last October. She did, however, bury their bodies in caskets in her yard, and then somehow had them dug up and placed back in her home.
According to RAW, she is vague about the details. She won’t explain how she was able to dig the bodies back up, or who might have helped her.
But she is extremely open about what she did with the corpses, and why she did it.
“Death is very hard for me to take,” she explained, saying that she believes in God, but fears that death is truly the end. Between that, and a serious case of claustrophobia, she couldn’t handle the thought of her husband and sister trapped in a box underground.
Instead, she kept her sister in the living room, dressed and clean on the couch. She kept her husband in a sitting room off of the detached garage, in similar care.
She washed and groomed them, talked to him, and even kept glasses on her sister’s face.
“I’d go in, and I’d talk, and I’d forget. I put glasses on her. When I put the glasses on, it made all the difference in the world. I would fix her up. I’d fix her face up all the time.”
Despite the length of time she has kept at least one body in her home, no one seemed to know, other than whoever might have assisted her in getting then there. Neighbors often assisted her, but had no idea.
It wasn’t until a member of her late husband’s family alerted police that she was caught.
“I think that is dirty, rotten,” she said of the relative.
She is now potentially facing criminal charges of defacing a corpse, and of health code violations. The state will decide later this month whether or not to charge her.
