Mother Who Faked Her Son’s Cancer to Get Donations Facing Felony Charges

October 1, 2010

Michigan (ChattahBox Crime News) – A woman who faked the cancer of her 12-year-old son is set to appear in court today on charges of child abuse and false pretense.

Carol Lynn Schnuphase, a 47-year-old from Macomb County, Michigan, is far from mother of the year. Not only did she allegedly fake her son’s cancer for donations, but it is believed that she drugged his food to make it look convincing.

After the death of her husband, Schnuphase allegedly told her son he had Leukemia, shaved his head, started to put things into his food to make him ill, and started Facebook posting to build a foundation for eventually running fundraisers for cash.

Her church, which she had attended for more than a decade, unknowingly helped her in the scam, as did several others. Believing her son was really ill, they agreed to host such events as spaghetti dinners to gather donations for her son’s “care” and medical costs. She raised more than $7,000.

She is facing felony charges of second-degree child abuse and false pretense for each charge over $1,000. She could be facing up to 39 years in prison.
