Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on a Vietnam stage, making history.Boston (ChattahBox) – Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on a Vietnam stage, making history.

Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown kicked off the event stating, “Good morning Vietnam!” This was done in the resort town of Nha Trang.

From here, the event took over in a prime time slow for viewers in the U.S.

The 56-year-old event marked the second-year in a row that Miss USA fell in the evening gown part of the competition.

One billion people, it is estimated, watched the event around the world.

The newest country has a representative for the first time this year as well, Miss Kosovo.

In the end it was 22-year old Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela, taking home the crown.

She was announced the winner by American talk show host Jerry Springer.
