The Dark Knight broke records with its midnight showings, grossing $18.5 million in its opening night.

This broke the record held by Star Wars: Episode III – Revengs of the Sith which opened in May 2005.

The $18.5 million was for midnight showings only, and does not take into account showings at theaters at 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.

The Dark Knight now has its eyes set on breaking the all-time opening weekend record of $151.1 million, held by Spider-Man 3.

Many expect The Dark Knight to get very close to the box office record.
