Twilight sequel ‘New Moon’ looking at Michael Copon and Ben Barnes for key roles

December 16, 2008

Hollywood (ChattahBox) — There is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the new Twilight sequel, New Moon, apparently. This past weekend began with a press release from Summit Entertainment officially naming “New Moon” director Chris Weitz to the job, following last week’s dismissal and replacement of Catherine Hardwicke. Hardwicke probably won’t be the last “Twilight” talent replaced before the sequel, as suspicious in its omission of the release seemed to all but confirm Twilighter whispers that Taylor Lautner, will be replaced.

Summit Studios, reportedly doesn’t want to re-hire “baby-faced” Taylor Lautner as Jacob because they don’t think he has what it takes to play the werewolf love interest/lead in New Moon. Rumor is that 26-year-old “Scorpion King 2” actor Michael Copon is one of several actors Weitz is considering to play the new, “grown up” Jacob Black. A representative for Copon told MTV News that they’re making an all out effort to land the high-profile gig. In a bit of 21st-century self-promotion, the actor has even recently updated his Facebook status with messages like: “Michael Copon [is] in a Twilight Zone!” and “Michael Copon is the older Jacob Black!” Copon’s representative confirmed to MTV News that the Facebook page is run by the actor himself and that those are indeed his words.

Weitz still has many other key casting decisions to make and an extremely brief amount of time in which to make them. With barely 12 weeks until cameras are due to begin rolling, the “Golden Compass” filmmaker needs to find faces to portray several key characters — including the peace-keeping, Italian vampires known as the Volturi.

Supposedly, 27-year-old Narnia – Prince Caspian star Ben Barnes is also campaigning for a role. He’s said to be actively trying to get the role of Aro, “a mind-reading vampire whose “New Moon” encounter with Edward and Bella helps shape their destiny together.” And, coincidentally enough, Barnes has the same manager as Copon and Twilight star Cam Gigandet. Could be a big paycheck coming for the manager!

I agree 100% Lautner is too “baby-faced” to play Jacob Black. I think Weitz is making the right call. Not that Lautner did not do an awesome job in Twilight, I just think maybe the role has out grown him.

when i first heard that they are going to replace taylor for the role of jacob, the first actor that comes to my min was actualy michael copon…it’ll be great if they cast michael to play jacob black…sorry fellow twilighters, but i think that taylor is too “baby face” to play jacob black in “new moon” beccause the Jacob Black in the book is said t be grown up ( 6’5″, physically matured)…

I think you should get rid of taylor.
get Michael Copon or Steven Strait for the new Jacob Black. These are the ideal people to play Jacob in New Moon

    NOT BEN BARNES.
    he looks nothing like Jacob.
    NOT ONE BIT.
    goddness my,
they should let fans pick who it should be,
things would go a lot smoother.

    but, i do agree,
    Taylor is very young,
and i’m sorry, cannot bulk up in time to play Jacob.
    but i’m confused.
is Taylor Lautner still playing Jacob until he becomes well…
i don’t wanna give away things.
someone who knows what i am talking about please answer me!?

well first off, if you read the books then you will know that Taylor is perfect for Jacob. ANOTHER THING IS BEN BARNES IS GOING AFTER ARO NOT JACOB BUT MICHAEL HAS NO CHEMISTRY WITH THE CAST AND IT’LL RUIN CHEMISTRY DUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHH DUUUUUUUUHHHHHH. PLUS HAVE YOU HATERS EVER HEARD OF HOLLYWOOD EFFECTS AND MAKE-UP IF HE LOOK TO YOUNG THEN THEY CAN MAKE HIM OLDER AND BUFFIER. THEY DID IT WITH BRAD PITT WHY WOULDN’T DO WITH TAYLOR?!!
    GO TEAM TAYLOR!!!!
