Gloria Estefan…The Spy?

March 8, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – It looks as though such hits as ‘The Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” were close to never being created.

Gloria Estefan, the Latin-born singer who shot to fame as part of the musical group Miami Sound Machine, was once approached by the CIA as she worked for US Customs.

Being fluent in English, French, and Spanish, she was an interpretor, and caught the eye of the Central Intelligence Agency as a potential spy.

“They realised I was someone who could pass as a regular person without raising any eyebrows. So the CIA approached me and wanted me to train in their Atlanta HQ,” she explained.

But because of her father’s former role working for the Cuban government, and at the behest of her mother, she turned the offer down, going on to become a star, and a main feature in the Latin music movement in the US.

She now owns a chain of restaurants with her husband Emilio Estefan.

But she admits she could have taken the job, and no one would be any wiser.

“What better cover than going around as a singer, talking to presidents, talking to kings, close to all the people they wanted access to? So, who knows?”
