Marilyn Chambers Found Dead: Ivory Snow Girl

April 13, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The Los Angeles County coroner’s office is reporting that 1970s porn actress, Marilyn Chambers was found dead Sunday night, by her 17-year old daughter McKenna in her Santa Clarita trailer park home. The former angelic faced Ivory Snow cover model, turned porn star, was found unresponsive with no foul play suspected. She was 56-years old. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of Chamber’s death.

Chambers was born, Marilyn Ann Briggs in Providence, Rhode Island, determined at a young age to become a model or actress. Her first film appearance was a small role in the 1970, Barbara Streisand film, The Owl and the Pussycat. After moving to Hollywood, she landed a modeling job with Procter and Gamble, appearing on the Ivory Snow Soap box holding a baby under the now famous tag line, “99 & 44/100% pure.”

Chambers later rose to fame in 1972 after appearing in a first of its kind hard core X-rated film, named Behind the Green Door, where she engaged in numerous sexual acts, breaking taboos by having sex on screen with black porn actor Johnny Keyes.

Procter and Gamble quickly fired Chambers from her Ivory Snow modeling job after they found out about her porn career. The disconnect between the former pure as snow model appearing in a raunchy X-rated film, added to the film’s success and its receipts.

The success of Behind the Green Door launched the X-rated film industry. Many of Chambers’ movies were produced by the famous porn producers of the time, brothers Artie and Jim Mitchell. When she starred in Behind the Green Door, she demanded and received, a $25,000 salary and a percentage of the movie gross, an unheard of sum at the time. The movie grossed over $25 million.

Chambers went on to make over 30 porn films with such catchy titles, as Insatiable, described as “an orphaned heiress/fashion model embarks on a series of sexual encounters to satisfy her loneliness and insatiable appetite for sex, and the popular Resurrection of Eve, which is well known for its graphic orgy and group sex scenes.

The 1997 film Boogie Nights, starring Mark Wahlberg as a 1970s porn star realistically depicted the X-rated film industry in the 1970s-80s, including the drug abuse problems that many of the porn stars developed, as well as Chambers at one time. Boogie Nights revived the popularity of the kitchy 1970s X-rated films, which also serve as a historical body of work depicting the free-wheeling, drug abusing 1970s.

Chambers recorded a one hit wonder, disco single in 1976, called Benihana. Chambers also tried her hand in politics, when she ran for vice president in 2004 on the Personal Choice Party ticket.

Whatever some may think of Marilyn Chambers’ choice of career, she certainly made a cultural impact during her time, breaking sexual taboos in the process, becoming an iconic figure. It’s unfortunate she wasn’t able to hang on to some of her money in her later years, so she and her daughter could live comfortably.

Dying alone in a trailer home at the age of 56, after such a famous career, is a sad and not very fitting end to her life.
