“Dancing With the Stars” champion named

May 20, 2009

(ChattahBox) — ABC milked the final of “Dancing With the Stars” to an excruciatingly long 3 hours, but this year there was some true drama, as all three of the remaining celebrity contestants were excellent dancers, worthy of being champion.  All three finalists performed one last dance, each earning a perfect score of 30 from the judges. Including the very close judging Monday, essentially the judges completely left it to the fans at home to decide the winner this year. Viewer votes are combined with judges’ scores to determine the “Dancing” champ.
First Melissa Rycroft was dismissed leaving it down to 17-year-old US Olympic Gymnastic Champion Shawn Johnson and actor Gilles Marini. In the end Shawn Johnson emerged as the champion winning the mirrorball trophy. DWTS host Tom Bergeron said “less than 1 percent” separated the two finalists. Big congratulations to Shawn, who is vastly talented but had to mature quickly to compete against the adults. I myself thought Gilles Marini was the better dancer, but that’s part of the fun of DWTS and ultimately the majority of fans thought otherwise. I am always curious as to the demographics of votes that particular contestants on the show garner, but they aren’t captured, so no way of really knowing who had what fan base.
