Helio Castroneves wins third Indianapolis 500

May 24, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Allowed to focus now completely on racing Helio Castroneves has won his third Indianapolis 500.  Weeks after being acquitted of tax evasion charges, the 34-year-old Brazilian beat 2005 winner Dan Wheldon of England by more than 2 seconds. Castroneves became the ninth driver to win the historic race three times,  while Danica Patrick finished third, the best finish by a woman at Indianapolis.  Only three drivers have won it four times — A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears.

Castroneves who gained mainstream popularity as champion of Dancing With the Stars, completed a sweep of all the major prizes at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year. He won the pole position on May 9 and then came back last Friday to win the annual Indy 500 Pit Stop Competition.
