Glenn Beck’s Attack on Obama as ‘Racist’ Results in Pulled Ads
August 6, 2009
(ChattahBox)—Glenn Beck has proven there is no line he will not cross. On July 28, Beck strolled on the set of “Fox and Friends” and within a few seconds, without giving a second thought to what came out of his mouth, declared without preamble, that Barack Obama the President of the United States was a racist. And now Beck is finally paying the price with lost advertisers.
Beck’s comments: Obama has “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.” “I’m not saying he doesn’t like white people,” Beck said. “He has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist.”
It seemed, Beck’s outrageous attack on President Obama was going to get lost in the ugly clamor of hate speech that passes for punditry these days. Fox News yawned and issued an unapologetic statement about Beck having the right to the “..freedom to express his opinions.”
Three advertisers thought differently about Glenn Beck’s “freedom” to smear the president of the United States, as a “racist” on national television, and pulled their ads from his program. Lawyers.com, owned by LexisNexis, Procter & Gamble and Progressive Insurance demanded that their ads be removed from Beck’s program, after receiving thousands of complaints from ColorOfChange.org.
The website ColorOfChange.org is dedicated to “strengthening Black America’s political voice.” The organization began a campaign, urging its members to call on Beck’s advertisers to stop sponsoring his show, describing Beck’s comments as, “…repulsive, divisive and shouldn’t be on the air.”
John Michaels, Senior Communications Manager at LexisNexis responded to the complaints saying, “Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. “ We have suspended further advertising during Mr. Beck’s program.” Procter & Gamble and Progressive Insurance referred to advertising on Beck’s show as an error that would be corrected.
Fox News issued a statement saying that the ads were moved to run on different programs, with the network losing no revenue.
MSNBC’s Mike Barnicle weighed in on Beck’s outrageous attacks on President Obama, saying, “…Hello, Glenn!? His mother was white! He was raised by a white woman, his grandmother! Hello? Glenn? Come back down to Earth please!”
