Carrie Prejean Files Lawsuit: Says She was Fired for Religious Beliefs

August 31, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Carrie Prejean, the former Miss California, of “opposite marriage” fame announced through her attorney today that she is suing Miss California USA pageant officials for a whole laundry list of damages, including religious discrimination.

Prejean was fired from her role as Miss California after violating her contract, by refusing to make over dozens of public appearances and participating in political extra curricular activities without permission.

Prejean’s lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of California, argues that she complied with her contractual obligations, but was fired based solely on her religious beliefs opposing gay marriage. The complaint names Miss California USA officials Keith Lewis, Shanna Moakler, and publicist Roger Neal for damages of libel, public disclosure of private facts, religious discrimination, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

Prejean caused a media fire storm when she was criticized for her answer to the question portion of the USA pageant when asked about her views on Proposition 8 and gay marriage.

She answered, “I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other … same sex marriage or opposite marriage,” then added, “I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman … that’s how I was raised.”

Gay blogger and pageant judge, Perez Hilton and others roundly criticized her. But conservative anti-gay activists and organizations, such as the National Organization for Marriage adopted Prejean as their poster child for opposition to gay marriage.

Prejean’s attorney, Charles S. LiMandri, released the following statement:

“Over the past two months we have worked hard to provide overwhelming evidence that Carrie Prejean did not violate her contract with Miss California USA and did not deserve to have her title revoked by Keith Lewis. We will make the case that her title was taken from her solely because of her support of traditional marriage. Keith Lewis has refused to clear her good name or even to admit any wrongdoing. Therefore, Carrie Prejean is left with no alternative but to take her case to court where she expects to be fully vindicated.”

Keith Lewis and Donald Trump both say that Prejean’s religious beliefs opposing gay marriage had nothing to do with her firing. She violated her contract, was difficult to work with and she was nasty to people.

“To me she was the sweetest thing. Everyone else — she treated like s**t,” said Trump.

Trump said Prejean refused to appear at around 30 events on behalf of Miss California USA, which she was contractually bound to appear.

The “biblically correct” Miss Prejean it seems, doesn’t have a legal fake breast to stand on.
