‘Paranormal Activity’ The Newest ‘Blair Witch’, According To Reviews

September 26, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – The newest low-budget horror flick is hitting limited theaters, and it promises a good scare fest for anyone who likes scary movies done without the special effects.

Movies like ‘Blair Witch’ and ‘Cloverfield’ have created an industry for movies that use simple, first person camera work to create an atmosphere. ‘Paranormal Activity’ is hoping to follow in their footsteps.

It tells the story of a Katie and Micah, a couple living together in a new house. Katie begins to experience various strange happenings, and Micah is hard-set on figuring out what it going on.

Setting up a camera, he begins to get daily and nightly footage on the paranormal attacks, including strange footprints, bruises on his girlfriend, and even something crawling into bed with them.

Reviews have been positive for the movie, which appears to be genuinely scary in several scenes. It’s $15,000 budget ensured that the filmmakers had to get creative in how they made the flick, unable to rely on the overdone gore and special effects that most horror movies use as a foundation for their scares.

The trailer claims that it is the scariest movie of the year, and shows the audience shocked and frightened during several scenes. It is a throwback to the days of William Castle movies, when part of the hype was built on supposed audience reaction. It is a tactic that has been used several times in recent years, such as after the release ‘Hostel’.

While it is doubtful that the movie will leave you psychologically scarred, it promises great fun for horror fans that like something a little different than the average slasher or CGI paranormal fright.

I watched the pre-screening of Paranormal Activity the night before yesterday and absolutely loved it! And I am going to see it again tonight! It was my first time seeing the first-person camera work because I haven’t watched the Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield because I didn’t hear good reviews on them, plus, I wasn’t interested in puking during the film. Paranormal Activity wasn’t marketed as being based on true events, regardless, it did a superb job of building suspense and then scaring the heck out of the audience!! I’ve had trouble sleeping….but no regrets.

I know a few folks that hate Paranormal Activity, because they think of these kinds of films as “cheat” movies. Personally, I liked it, even if it’s flawed for sure, it’s still impressive to pull off a movie for $15k in a week. I wrote about this in my own Paranormal Activity review, if you care to share it. I’ll definitely check out his next film, but I’m hoping he’s improved his storytelling.
