David Letterman reveals sex extortion plot – CBS employee arrested

October 2, 2009

(ChattahBox) — David Letterman stunned his viewers when he announced in an extraordinary monologue on his show Thursday that someone was trying to blackmail him over his alleged sexual relationships with at least two female employees. As he mixed in jokes in his classic style while outlining what had happened to him, he seemed to confuse a laughing audience at Thursday’s taping about whether the story was true until near the end. Three weeks ago, Letterman said, he got in his car early in the morning and found a package with a letter saying, “I know that you do some terrible, terrible things and that I can prove that you do some terrible things.” He acknowledged the letter contained proof.  Letterman admitted that “this whole thing has been quite scary.”

Letterman reportedly approached the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which began an investigation that culminated in Thursday’s arrest of the suspect. Letterman and his lawyer set up a meeting with the man, who threatened to go public and write a book about Letterman unless he was given money. There were two subsequent meetings, with the man given a phony $2 million check at the last one. Reports now indicate the extorter was an employee at fellow CBS show 48 Hours. CBS reports that the 48 Hours employee suspect Robert J. Halderman, was arrested on charges of attempted grand larceny in the first degree.  Letterman said he testified before a grand jury on Thursday morning, “something I’ve never done in my life.” Of the affairs, he said, “Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would… I feel like I need to protect these people. I need to certainly protect my family.” It was not immediately clear when the relationships took place or how long they lasted. Beyond the obvious law enforcement developments, the impact on the 62-year-old Letterman, who married his longtime girlfriend in March and has a 5-year-old son with her and the show itself remains to be seen and will be object of speculation for some time to come.
