Heather Graham Sprints to Finish Line for Public Option in New Ad

(ChattahBox)— A new MoveOn.org ad supporting the inclusion of a public option in health reform, features actress Heather Graham as a “public option sprinter” providing much needed competition to the Insurance industry. The progressive advocacy group’s ad is designed to target insurance companies and bring greater awareness to the public option issue, as lawmakers haggle over the final provisions of the health reform bill.

The ad is very effective in its portrayal of insurance companies, as bloated and lazy, getting fat from obscenely high profits at the expense of the health of American citizens. The insurance companies featured; CIGNA, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Health and Humana are represented by men and women displaying different examples of blatant greed and gluttony.

One well fed insurance company executive is shown devouring a gigantic greasy hamburger, while another pops open a bottle of champagne in his face. Heather Graham, known for her roles in the Austin Powers films and Boogie Nights, then performs some athletic moves before the race, including a handstand, as the bloated insurance executives take notice.

The ad’s voice over is provided by actor Peter Coyote:

“Insurance companies have gotten lazy, bloated from the profits of raising our health care costs sky high while the health care crisis keeps getting worse. A public health insurance option is the key to quality affordable care for Americans. And over 70 percent of Americans want the public option. Some in Washington say this is unfair competition. But competition is as American as apple pie.”

The ad is called “Track Meet,” and will air on national cable channels, including MSNBC, CNN and Bravo along with a major showing on the Web.

A new Washington Post poll out yesterday, shows the majority of Americans supporting a public option in health care reform. And yet, lawmakers tasked with combining the two Senate bills, such as Sen. Max Baucus and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid continue to waffle on their support of a public option, without a clear commitment for the option from President Obama.

In a statement accompanying the ad’s release, Graham says, “The public option is our best shot at affordable health care for all, and I was honored to portray the public option.
