France Awards Clint Eastwood With French Legion Command
November 14, 2009
(ChattahBox)– Hollywood actor and director Clint Eastwood, the iconic tough-guy character in a host of films spanning half a century, was awarded one of France’s highest honors on Friday, in recognition of his enormous contribution to the art of cinema. President Nicolas Sarkozy awarded the 79-year-old Eastwood with the rank of commander of the French Legion.
After receiving his French Legion command Eastwood quipped, “As a commander of the arts and letters, I think I will go out on the streets of France today and throw my weight around.”
It is unusual for a foreigner to be elevated to the rank of commander of the French Legion of Honor, but Eastwood is highly regarded in France and spends quite a lot of time in the European country.
Eastwood has enjoyed a long and distinguished career playing stoic tough-guy characters, beginning in Westerns with his stint on the TV show Rawhide in the early 60s and his popular Man With No Name character in a series of Spaghetti Westerns. He went on to create a number of other memorable roles, such as Inspector Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry movies.
His later accomplishments as a director in such films, as Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby and Mystic River has raised his status to a Hollywood legend, earning him five Academy Awards.
