Kal Penn Feels the Lure of Hollywood, May Leave WH for New ‘Harold and Kumar Flick
April 3, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Actor Kal Penn of “Harold and Kumar” and “House” fame surprised many in Hollywood, when he left the acting profession for a position in the Obama administration last Summer. He asked for his character on House to be killed and off he went to Washington to serve as the White House’s associate director of public engagement. Now, it seems a third installment of the popular and lucrative “Harold and Kumar” movie franchise is luring Penn away from politics and back to Hollywood.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Penn’s agent confirmed his decision to return to his acting career:
“Kal Penn’s reps confirm that the actor will leave his post as Barack Obama’s associate director of public engagement to return to his acting career. First up for the actor: a new Harold & Kumar movie, this one with a Christmas theme. New Line Studios has confirmed that the movie, to be directed by newcomer Todd Strauss Schulson, will begin filming in late June with an eye on a holiday 2011 release.”
Penn uses his given name, Kalpen Suresh Modi in his White House position and his role there is to facilitate relationships between the White House and Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities.
Although his role at the White House was always intended to be a temporary stint, his star power as a public liaison will be missed.
When asked, Shin Inouye at the White House Office of Media Affairs, did not confirm Penn’s imminent departure. “Mr. Modi is honored to serve in this Administration and has no announcements to make about his tenure here at this point,” said Inouye.
