Christian Singer Comes Out Of The Closet And Back Onto The Music Scene
April 16, 2010
(ChattahBox) – Jennifer Knapp, the Dove award winning Christian music singer, has come back onto the entertainment scene for the first time since her sudden disappearance in 2003, confirming the rumor that she is gay.
Knapp’s sudden retreat from the spotlight caused a great deal of speculation among her usually conservative fans, many of which believed that she was ill.
But she has now come out of the closet, saying that her decision to leave her career for a time was due to her knowledge that many of her fans would refuse to buy her records if they knew that she was a proud lesbian with a life partner.
Knapp has been with her partner for eight years, and she has decided to come out with the truth, rather than hiding behind it and giving up all chances to do what she loves.
“I’m aware that the evangelical community has problems with divorce and many other facets of their artists, let alone homosexuality. I really felt a strong obligation to be able to address that because for many people, it was really clear that they wouldn’t participate in buying a record because it was against their beliefs.
“For many people who buy Christian music or have been familiar with me and my writings as a person of faith, I felt like it was the honest thing to do. The last thing I wanted to do was to have someone go out and buy a record and feel like they had been hoodwinked.”
Knapp is not the only person to come out with their homosexuality in the Christian music community. In 2008, popular singer Ray Boltz came out as a gay man, and in 2009 Tonex did the same.
Knapp has a knew album coming out in May, and she says that it is with a new label that she says will take away the label of a Christian artist, which she never felt comfortable with.
