Mo’Nique’s Brother Offers Public Apology For Years Of Sexual Abuse
April 20, 2010
(ChattahBox) – The brother of Mo’Nique has come forward and offered a public apology to his Oscar-winning sister, admitting that he molested her for years as a child.
The sexual abuse began when she was seven-years-old, and her brother was eleven. He claims he was using drugs at the time, including cocaine, and that he himself had been sexually abused.
“I’m sorry, Mo’Nique. I’m sorry,” Gerald Imes said on The Oprah Winfrey Show. “I betrayed everybody’s trust. I broke that trust. I broke that bond.”
Mo’Nique has not commented on the apology, and she refused to be a part of the interview with her abuser. However, she has said in the past that she drew on those painful experiences when she played an abusive mother in Precious.
Imes spent twelve years in prison for molesting another young girl, but hopes this and his abuse of his sister will not keep her from allowing him to be a part of her life.
“I can only hope by coming forth today that somewhere down the line we can come back together as siblings. I understand your pain. I truly think, let’s share this together and move on.”
