Concert Pianist Mikhail Pletnev Arrested for Child Rape
July 7, 2010
Thailand (ChattahBox) – Russian born piano prodigy Mikhail Pletnev has shocked the orchestra world, after he was arrested earlier this week on charges of raping a 14-year-old boy, the Telegraph reports.
Pletnev was arrested after the police were tipped off about the alleged attack by a man who runs an illegal prostitution ring, who says he knew about the rape of an unnamed victim.
When police searched his house, they also found child pornography on his computer, which he has now been charged with making himself. Authorities have not confirmed if the victim in the images are the same as the boy in the accused attack.
Pletnev has denied the charges, saying that he has lived in Thailand for 15 years, and would never commit such a crime. He has called the entire affair a “misunderstanding”.
He admits to knowing the man who accused him, however, but says he had no idea he was a pimp. He claims to have hired him to watch his home when he was away on tour, and that he was the one who put the porn on his computer.
Pletnev has been released on bail in order to do a tour of concerts in Europe, a decision that sparked outrage from child protection groups, who say the nature of the crimes, and the possibility of a 20 year sentence if convicted, should be enough to keep him in the country.
