William Shatner: Actor, Pitchman, Now Journalist?
July 30, 2010
(ChattahBox)—Actor William Shatner, of Star Trek fame, like a good wine, improves with age. How else to explain his renewed career and popularity as a pop culture icon, after appearing in a series of self-depreciating spots for Priceline.com? Now, nearly 80, the former Capt. James T. Kirk is a scoop-generating muckraker. What did he do? Shatner phoned up Lee Boyd Malvo, the D.C. Sniper in prison and discovered that Malvo claims to have committed dozens of other shootings throughout the country, some with co-conspirators.
Shatner made the call, as part of “Aftermath,” his new program airing on A&E’s the Biography Channel. The series revisits the people behind news stories years later. And Malvo was one of the first revisited.
“Getting the opportunity to speak with Lee Malvo is a moment I’ll never forget,” Shatner said in a press release. “He was only 17 when he committed these horrific acts, a monster forged by the only father figure in his life, and it was simply astonishing that he’s found the maturity and humility to admit so many new crimes in his effort to make amends.”
And Shatner told The NY Times Media Decoder, “It was the most electrifying 20 minutes I’ve ever spent on the phone.”
But law enforcement officials in Virginia are skeptical of the claims made by Malvo to Shatner. Still, Maryland police detectives plan to interview him.
Regardless, it makes for good TV apparently.
Shatner will next interview, Bernard Goetz, Jessica Lynch and Mary Kay Letourneau.
