Pop Star Didn’t Tell Three Lovers She Was HIV Positive, Court Hears
August 17, 2010
Germany (ChattahBox) – No Angels pop singer Nadja Benaissa has told a court that she had sex with three partners, all unprotected, without telling them she was HIV positive.
Benaissa told those present that she had begun using crack cocaine at the age of 14, and found out she was HIV positive when she became pregnant at the age of 16. In 2000, she was on the show ‘Popstars’, then joined No Angels. She hid her condition from everyone out of fear of it hurting her new career.
One of the men she had unprotected sex with says he was infected with HIV from a three month relationship in 2004. He did not find out until 2007, after encountering Benaissa’s aunt, who asked if he knew she had had the condition.
The other men have not come forward with information on whether or not they have been infected.
According to the Telegraph, it was not until she was arrested for causing grievous bodily harm that she realized what she had done was wrong.
“When I was arrested I realised that the way that I had dealt with the illness had been wrong … I made a big mistake,” her lawyer read out a statement to the court.
AIDS advocacy groups have criticized law enforcement for the way her arrest was handled. She only served 10 days in jail before her release, and now that she has admitted to wrongdoing her sentence will likely be milder. She could face several years in prison, and will learn her sentence on August 26.
