In the end though, it was the mighty Iron Man which managed to retain the top spot.

Speed Racer took in $20.2 million in its opening weekend at the box office, taking in $15 million below expectations and making for an extremely disappointing debut to say the least.

Iron Man took in just over $100 million in its opening weekend, and in weekend two it defended its spot at the top taking in another $50.5 million.

Warner Bros. is hopeful that Speed Racer will be able to continue doing well in terms of garnering money over time, especially through Memorial Day at the box office.

Things aren't getting any easier for Iron Man and Speed Racer though as Chronicles or Narnia: Prince Caspian is set to release this week, followed by the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on May 22.
