Latest Wikileak Documents Are A Crime Against Humanity
November 29, 2010
(ChattahBox Op/Ed) – An excellent piece written by my Chattahbox.com colleague Shayne is a must read with respect to the incredible story unfolding quickly about Wikileaks and its immediate impact on policy, both foreign and domestic, and national and world security. So damning and damaging are these documents that nothing good can come from these secret documents. I implore you to stop and take a read of this well written and common sense piece that affirms one critical truth: some topics transcend politics and for the good of our State and of our soldiers and citizenry I passionately believe there is a line and that line has now been crossed and it never should have been.
But there is more to this story than the critical points Shayne makes. The root of every story, as any journalist knows, is one simple word: source.
What is/are the sources of these leaks?
Therein lies the problem and at the center of this damaging storm raging on at an international level and where some heroic effort and attention should be made.
My reasoning here is founded in the idea that as critical as truth is and as imperative as humane and reasoned policy and practice is, what hides between what we know and what happened is not a constitutional right to know, and as such if we are to be responsible citizens we owe it to our safety and security, among many other points, to realize that too much knowledge can and does have a crushing and negative effect on the future of our safety and security. You can and will disagree with me, of that I’m sure, but this idea of transparency in government is a fallacy born and raised on the arrogant faux-intelligence of those from the outside looking in thinking that their utopian idea of leadership, governing, security, and superiority begins and ends with the United States of America. It does not!
The ripple waves of these documents do nothing but empower an international subculture that are hell bent on the destruction of freedom and their fever-hot point of view that has little to do with reality but everything to do with insanity. What I speak of will only makes sense to those who understand that in order to survive in a fairly comfortable world that we live in some things have to be done, negotiated, fought and earned and that the process, as imperfect as any process is, has been working to protect billions of people for many hundreds of years.
These leaks, to the delight of some, serve no common good. As Shayne rightfully pointed out there are some “outted” truths that have had a positive impact, but when we realistically weigh the good versus the potential harm, it should be clear that Wikileaks threatens the very life you enjoy today in a very real and extremely dangerous and serious way.
The media, however you want to define them, should not be publishing these documents, but they are. The pundits, who will use this information to continue to spread their unique brand of hatred and disgust, on both sides of the political aisle, will accomplish nothing but further division and push us further away from healing what ails us. Damage control is not possible in this situation and any attempt at defending what is becoming known will be fruitless and nothing but a waste of time, energy, money and critical diplomacy.
How does anyone win in this scenario?
I am not living with my head in the sand, hardly. What damage has been done is done. What happens as this information slowly creeps through the veins of an international community like a virus with no known cure will only further sicken a world so in need of compassion and cure that the hands of time will slow to a crawl and the dis-ease created by Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who should be tried for international crimes against humanity, can and will do nothing by fan the flames of distrust and create a level of paranoia and defensiveness that can only produce more death and destruction.
Argue all you want with me, but as we now have reams of new information to be dissected and manipulated; information that will be the foundation for more lies and mistruths, we will only find ourselves mired chaos. No one will win.
