A Weakened President Gets His Way, But At What Cost?
December 17, 2010
(ChattahBox Op/Ed News) – No surprises here at all. The great tax compromise is now headed to the President for his signature and as most Republicans are resplendently gloating today, they have one further victory to celebrate as well as Senate leader Harry Reid, (D) Nevada, was unable to get enough support to pass a vote on a new budget spending Bill in effect handing the Republicans another fiscal victory in a matter of hours yesterday. Oh well, we all knew this was coming, didn’t we?
So what’s the fall out of all this? The easy answer not much, except the reality of increased debt, a weakened President and a country more confused than ever. The confusion part is expected and I’d think well planned out. Even national organizations that I am a member of or other organizations where I receive their e-mail newsletters had a hard time describing what yesterday was. Some sent out congratulatory announcements; others not, and still others sent out the mixed message that exclaimed this new law was great but…
And then news comes from Democratic Congressman Patrick DeFazio from Oregon who tells us that President Obama called Democratic members of Congress and basically begged then to support this Bill or he would lose the Presidency. That my good friends is embarrassing for the President and the Party.
But we will move on. We will live to fight another day and whether you feel victorious today or are angry, life will move forward.
The budget failure in the Senate yesterday was clearly a political maneuver by Republicans who understand with clarity that in a few short weeks there will be a whole lot more of them inside the beltway to skew the conversation and if they are successful to also change legislation. Of course that is no secret, but one must wonder how much power they managed to garner in the waning days of the 111th Congress and how damaging it will be not just to the Democratic Party but more importantly to the American people.
Because governing is a process and because there are checks and balances in place, and mostly because the branches of government favor insanity from taking hold completely, I am holding up the idea that all is not lost and I sincerely do believe that, and as I clearly see an opportunity for leaders to emerge and the people to step up, and as I pledged the other day I plan to be a part of that uprising , we now must be careful to not let the next few weeks which will be relatively quiet lull us into some kind of complacency. I’ll be sure to not let that happen on these pages that I can promise you.
There comes a time where you have to move forward and for us that time is now. There will be plenty of other issues to champion and the race for the White House will commence soon there after. So rest for now, but be aware as we have some important work to do and soon. Rest but don’t go entirely to sleep as we have to begin to work hard at winning if indeed that is what we want to do…and we all do, of course.
I’m busy building up information and reacquainting myself with old sources and political friends who are willing and ready to help. I am preparing to arm you and me with information that requires you to do something more then read, and I feel confident that you will.
I’m very happy for the long term unemployed today and for all of us who will pay fewer taxes and keep more of our paychecks. For that I am grateful, but I am also mindful that came at a price and it is that which will fuel how I move forward, with purpose and passion.
