N.H. GOPers: Gay Marriage Leads to ‘Sharia or Islamic Law’

February 18, 2011

(ChattahBox Political News)—The newly elected Republican lawmakers in Congress and in state legislatures across the country, whom rode November’s tea party wave into office, backed by oodles of undisclosed corporate cash, are already making their mark with odious right-wing legislation attacking the rights of women, minorities and the LGBT community. Along with extremist GOP bills that would turn the clock back to the 19th century, comes bigotry, paranoia and a penchant for Glenn-Beckian conspiracy theories reminiscent of the radical John Birch Society. Meet the tea party lawmakers of New Hampshire, whom are seeking to roll back the state’s same-sex marriage law, enacted in 2009. In their warped worldview, same-sex marriage leads to gay Islamic polygamy, which in turn would open up the gates of hell to unleash Sharia law in the Granite State. Which of course, as any viewer of Fox News’ unhinged conspiracy theorist Glenn Beck knows, is the harbinger of a dangerous New World Order and a Muslim, Communist caliphate. If this all sounds utterly insane to you, that’s because it is.

Of course, once the layers of Muslim paranoia and conspiracy theories are peeled away, what’s left is good old fashioned bigotry and homophobia. The GOP tin foil hats and gay hate came out at the House Judiciary Committee, in which a hearing was held on several bills repealing New Hampshire’s same-sex marriage law.

As reported by Thing Progress’ the Wonk Room, the testimony of many Republican lawmakers opposing same-sex marriage ranged from the absurd to the truly deranged.

Rep. Alfred Baldasaro (R), a virulent homophobe, who previously testified that the same-sex marriage law would lead to incest, blood thirsty Muslims demanding “three, four wives…,” and the selling of the state’s children to a “homosexual couple that’s not married, for $10,000,” fearmongered about polygamy.

“The same thing happened in Canada, where they passed gay marriage. Now they’re fighting in the courts to get 3 husbands, 3 wives,” declared Baldasaro.

And Howard Kaufman, a conservative opponent of same-sex marriage, testified that equal marriage rights would bring Sharia law to New Hampshire. Oh my!

“A future redefinition of marriage that permits polygamy would facilitate the introduction an aspect of Sharia or Islamic law that permits a man to have up to four wives,” said Kaufman at the packed hearing yesterday.

What bigoted fools.

It’s obvious that these legislators can’t be accused of possessing well developed critical thinking skills! It’s quite a leap from gay marriage to Sharia Law. Based on their rhetoric, I find it hard to believe that any of them actually understand what Sharia Law is. Furthermore, why would a marriage between two persons make them, or the area/state they live in, automatically susceptible to Sharia Law? It makes my brain hurt trying to follow the N.H. anti-gay marriage legislators’ line of reasoning.
