June 24, 2008
New York (ChattahBox) - A new study has shown that a drug used to treat leukemia, Gleevec is also helpful for stroke patients.
The research was carried out at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research as well as the University of Michigan Medical School.
They found that the drug Gleevec is actually quite helpful for stroke patients when combined with the drug tPA..
The combination of the drugs was tested on mice and found that it helped reduce bleeding in patients.
The drugs were also found to work up to 5 hours after the onset of the stroke, compared to just 2 or 3 hours for only tPA.
The study was published in the journal Nature Medicine.
