The New York City ban on trans fat goes into full effect today after a 3-month grace period....New York (ChattahBox) – The New York City ban on trans fat goes into full effect today after a 3-month grace period.

The new ban makes New York City the first in the U.S. to implement such strict rules on the use of the trans fat, as anyone in violation will face a $2,000 fine.

The New York City trans fat ban applies to pretty much all restaurants, including the likes of McDonald’s and others. Several restaurant chains have already complied and appear ready for the switch.

The decision to ban the artery-clogging trans fat came last year, as an attempt to try and improve the health of the people of New York, and fight obesity.

The New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden stated that it is too early to tell how effective the ban is, as they have yet to figure out just how many restaurants have yet to comply.
